Gareth Churchill
Gareth Churchill was born into a Welsh family in 1980 but grew up on the Somerset Levels. He studied in London with Rhian Samuel and in Cardiff with Anthony Powers; receiving a PhD in composition in 2008.
His work has received various prizes including the David Wynne / Eirwen Thomas memorial Award and the William Matthias Prize.
His commissioned output includes works for the Vale of Glamorgan Festival, Musicfest Aberystwyth and Bangor Music Festival, with performances of his music having reached audiences in Belgium, Estonia, Italy, Japan, Norway, Spain, the USA and the UK.
His oeuvre is composed of miniatures and sequences there-of, which reflect an interest in cryptography, with many works’ titles providing the key to understanding their musical means.
He has taught at Cardiff University School of Music, on the composers’ course at Musicfest Aberystwyth and is a music teacher for Cardiff University Centre for Continuing and Professional Education.
